Odeon was part of the Rank organisation for 58 years but was merged in 2004 with rival United Cinemas International (UCI) when both were bought by Terra Firma, the private-equity firm. Together the two chains operate almost 2,000 cinema screens across Britain, Ireland and mainland Europe, making the group the biggest of its type outside America. In 2010 the business trebled its number of 3D screens to more than 750, and the group has since benefited from the success of 3D versions of films such as Toy Story 3. Under chief executive Rupert Gavin, sales reached £650m in 2010.
