Modern cars can contain up to 50 computing devices and 100 different motors. Finding the cause of faults would give mechanics a headache were it not for the likes of Omitec Group. Founded in 1971, the Wiltshire company designs automotive testers that plug into a car and check all its systems. Omitec is also developing telematics, a way of relaying information about a car’s performance on the road to a remote computer. The company’s system is installed on MG Rover’s new SV sports car. John Watkins and Edward Lane led a management buyout of Omitec from Solvera in July 1998. Sales grew by more than 72% a year from an annualised £3.7m in 1999 to £18.9m in 2002.
