Founded in 2002 by Rob Bishop, 62, Optal issues Mastercard-branded payment products to simplify and reduce the cost of B2B payments. Its single-use virtual bank account numbers are used by travel, insurance, education and e-procurement companies to make fast, secure payments to suppliers that are accepted at 35m locations. Sales, which represent fees charged, grew to £177.4m last year after it expanded the number of currencies in which it offers payments to 34, and thanks to increased demand because of a growing online travel market. In 2017 it acquired the payment technology company Invapay for an undisclosed sum.
