Optos raised £30m from venture capitalists and business angels, including Brian Souter of Stagecoach, to develop its retina scanning technology, Optomap. Invented by founder Douglas Anderson, together with a team at his industrial design firm after his son went blind in one eye, it produces an image of the retina that is e-mailed to specialists for analysis. New customers in America and Germany have helped to boost sales 113% a year, from £3.7m in 2002 to £16.6m in 2004, when the company made a large loss.
