Founded in 1963, PD Hook’s four chick hatcheries produce more than 4m eggs every week. The Oxfordshire company also breeds and rears chicks, with a breeder base of 1.5m hens. Competition from imports has been made worse by the strong pound, but the acquisition of operations belonging to Premier Fresh Foods, Devon Crest Poultry and Buxted Chicken have boosted PD Hook’s profits 51% a year from £1.1m in 1998 to £3.8m in 2001.
