A distributor of cigarettes, sweets and soft drinks, Hove-based Palmer & Harvey claims to deliver 26% of the tobacco and 15% of the confectionery sold in the UK. The company was founded in 1925, and was bought by its management in 1988. Last year, the company’s current executives bought out the 1988 management team in a £160m deal that was supported by Barclays, Burdale and Royal Bank of Scotland. In 2002, Palmer & Harvey reported slim operating profits of £12m on sales of £3,328m. It employed 3,177 people.
