Founded in 1961 by Peter Bushell, Whitstable-based P&B Metal Components makes parts used in switches for cars and buildings. It cites a skilled workforce and automated factories as the main reasons it can compete globally. It expanded into east Asia in the early 1990s – China is its largest, most rapidly-growing market. Now run by Bushell’s son Paul, international sales grew 32% a year, from £13.5m in 2009 to £23.5m in 2011.
