The Pentland Group gained some unexpected publicity in April when Prince William was snapped wearing Speedo trunks. Pentland owns the brand along with others such as Berghaus, Ellesse, Red or Dead and Mitre. It also owns international footwear licences for Lacoste and Ted Baker, and the UK licence for Kickers. Overall, the group’s brands are sold in 183 countries. Stephen Rubin took over the reins at Pentland in 1969 and 30 years later took the company private. Sales have been declining in recent years but still totalled £380m in 2002.
