Speedo, Mitre, Canterbury and Berghaus are among the clothing and sports brands managed by this London group, whose sales grew 39% to £5.1bn in 2018. Founded in 1932 as the Liverpool Shoe Company, it has been run by three generations of the Rubin family, with Stephen Rubin, 81, current chairman, and his son, Andy, 54, chairman of Pentland Brands, in charge today. The group owns a majority stake in JD Sports, which acquired American retailer Finish Line for $560m (£435m) in 2018, and UK rival Footasylum for £90m this year.
