You may not have heard of Pentland Group, but you are very likely to recognise many of the clothing and sports-equipment brands it owns, such as Berghaus, Speedo and Mitre. Founded in 1932, Pentland is the global licensee for Lacoste and Ted Baker footwear and the British licensee for Kickers. It invested in the Hunter wellington boot business in 2006 and has re-established the brand as a fashion icon. Owned by the founding Rubin family and chaired by Stephen Rubin, sales in 2010 grew to £1,299m This includes £878m from its 58% stake in listed sports retailer JD Sports, but excludes wholesale sales by licensees.
