This Edinburgh company develops software tools that help energy companies model their production fields and maximise the extraction of oil and gas. Founded in 1990, it says it spends more than £3m a year on research and development to improve its technology. With offices in Houston and Beijing, the company now works in 60 countries and has more than 300 clients, including BP, Shell and Total. Profits have grown 42% a year, from £5m in 2005 to £14.3m in 2008, which included a £3.3m foreign-exchange gain.
