Pet grooming, ‘bunny villages’ and veterinary services are some of the features that have helped Pets At Home boost its sales. Founded in 1991 by Anthony Preston, the pet-supplies business grew organically until 1999 when it acquired Petsmart, a bigger rival with 95 stores. Today the Cheshire company runs 145 pet superstores in Britain and has grown sales 70% a year from £36.1m in 1998 to £178.3m in 2001, when it had 1,976 staff.
