Founded by Anthony Preston in Cheshire in 1991, it now runs 236 pet superstores in Britain and three in Australia, stocking food and accessories ranging from dog kennels to chipmunk muesli. Canine visitors get a free biscuit, and kids are kept amused by the bunny village. Some stores also provide grooming salons, veterinary surgeries and in-store adoption centres. Bridgepoint acquired a majority stake in a £230m deal in 2004, and is reportedly preparing to float the business within the next year. Chief executive Matt Davies oversaw sales of £354.6m in 2008.
