In 2001 Phoenix won a £15m five-year contract, in partnership with Logica, to upgrade and support the IT systems of the education watchdog Ofsted, including its six regional offices and 1,500 inspectors. This was followed by a similar contract with Logica for the Crown Prosecution Service.
Such work has increased the profits of the Northampton company by 44% a year from £1.2m in 1998 to £3.6m in 2001, when it employed 550 staff.
