Headquartered in Staffordshire, this mobile phone retailer and insurance provider opened 45 high street stores in 2012, bringing its UK total to nearly 700. Its partnership with Dixons Retail led to the opening of another 57 branches within Currys and PC World stores. In March 2011, the private equity firm BC Partners acquired Phones 4u from its founder John Caudwell in a deal that was thought to value it at £700m. Under chief executive Tim Whiting, 48, the group recorded sales of £1.1bn in 2012.
