The Staffordshire-based Phones 4u claims to be Britain’s leading mobile-phone retailer for the youth market. The business specialises in mobile phones and related products such as mobile broadband, laptops and accessories. It was founded by John Caudwell in 1987 and sold to Providence Equity Partners in 2006. In March this year BC Partners acquired the company in a bond-backed deal thought to value it at £700m. Expansion in Britain and Northern Ireland has resulted in a network of more than 500 stores. Led by chief executive Tim Whiting, the group reported sales of £912m in 2010.
