Following the birth of her daughter, chief executive Cat Gazzoli, 42, saw the potential for an organic baby food brand, and co-founded Piccolo in 2015 with nutritional specialist Alice Fotheringham, 34, and creative director Kane O’Flaherty, 31. The company began trading in 2016 with six products, and now has over 40, which are stocked in UK supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Morrisons, and Tesco. It has raised a total of £3.7m, from sources including private investors such as TV chef Prue Leith and Mark Angela, the former chief executive of Pizza Express, who both invested in 2016. Mumbai-based DSG Consumer Partners invested £400,000 in November 2017 and an additional £1.1m in 2018 to help the company’s expansion into Southeast Asia. Revenues grew to £2.6m in 2018, and are forecast to hit £4.3m this year.
