Derbyshire-based Pickstock Ashby is a family-run abattoir that trades only in beef. Every year it slaughters 60,000 cows for export, procuring them from local farmers and livestock markets. The business was founded in 2003 by Greg Pickstock and his brothers Andrew and Rowland, and its main export markets include mainland Europe, south and west Africa, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China. Thanks to competitive pricing and firm overseas demand, international sales grew 75% a year, from £12.1m in 2009 to £37m in 2011
