This Liverpool firm owns an international network of cotton-farming and ginning operations in Africa. It supplies cotton seed to farmers and buys their harvest for processing at its factories before selling to the textile industry. It also trades physical cotton and provides riskmanagement services. After the cotton crisis of 2008 and a partial restructuring, Plexus has made steady progress and in 2010, under founder and chairman Nick Earlam, sales were up 52% to £259.2m and profits rose to £7.7m.
