Marine anti-terrorism initiatives and new legislation governing security systems for vessels over 500 tons have helped to boost sales at Pole Star Space Applications, which makes tracking software and security systems for ships. Former banker Darrel Sheinman founded the company in 1998 after a friend’s shipment of red telephone boxes to California went missing and he hit on the idea of tracking objects on the internet using satellites. Customers such as BP and P&O now use the company’s Purplefinder system to track and communicate with more than 8,000 ships worldwide. Sales have grown 61% a year from £1.2m in 2002 to £3.1m in 2004.
