Polestar contract prints publications ranging from Cosmopolitan to The Sunday Times magazine and is owned by Investcorp. It uses 650,000 tonnes of paper and 30,000 tonnes of ink a year. Besides magazines and newspaper supplements, the company also prints academic publications, catalogues, brochures, cartons and labels. Such work at its 37 printing sites generated sales of £535m in 2001, when Polestar had 6,240 staff, but made operating losses of £11m.
