As a self-confessed maverick, David Harrison did not fit in at a traditional insurance company. So in 1996, with ‘individuality’ as his mantra, he left and joined up with Maurice Cotter, his business partner, to found Positive Solutions, an independent financial adviser. The company has a network of 511 self-employed advisers who operate under the Positive Solutions brand name using laptop computers and the company’s extranet to carry out their business. Positive’s sales consist of the fees and commissions it receives on the financial products its advisers sell. The Newcastle company has raised its sales 216% a year from £412,000 in 1998 to £13m in 2001, when it employed 25 permanent staff.
