The discount retailer Poundland sells more than 3,000 products, including food and household goods, all priced at £1. It has flourished in the recession and now has 396 stores in the UK, with 62 more to open this year. It has also expanded into the Republic of Ireland, with 10 stores under its new Dealz brand. Warburg Pincus, the private equity group, backed a reported £200m secondary buyout from Advent International in June 2010. Under chief executive Jim McCarthy, sales at the West Midlands company grew 26% to reach £642m in 2011.
