Pret A Manger’s maroon and white fascia has become a common sight on Britain’s high streets since it was founded in 1986 by Sinclair Beecham and Julian Metcalfe. The London company’s use of natural ingredients to create a superior sandwich has been widely imitated, improving workers’ lunchtime choice no end. The chain now runs about 165 shops at home and 25 in New York and Hong Kong. Sales reached £192.7m in 2006 under managing director Clive Schlee and the company is reported to be up for sale for up to £400m.
