Using only preservative-free, ethically-sourced ingredients to make fresh sandwiches, salads and soups each day has proved a fantastically successful format for the high street chain Pret A Manger. Started in 1986, Pret now has 352 shops worldwide, with stores in four American cities as well as in Hong Kong and Paris. Under chief executive Clive Schlee, 55, profits hit an annualised £24.1m in the year to December 2012, due largely to international expansion. Bridgepoint bought a majority share in the company in 2008 in a £345m deal.
