Kate Moss and Paul Gascoigne are among the celebrities who have used the Priory Group’s hospitals when life in the fast lane became too much. With 15 hospitals, 14 schools, nine rehabilitation centres for neuro-psychiatric care and three secure units, it claims to be Britain’s largest independent provider of mental healthcare. The company was formed when Chai Patel acquired Priory Healthcare and merged it with part of Westminster Health Care in 2000. There was a management buyout in 2002, when the private-equity firm Doughty Hansen took control of the company. In 2004 sales reached £155.4m and in July this year Doughty sold out to the Dutch bank ABN Amro for £875m.
