The Priory Group has a reputation for helping celebrities check out of the fast lane but most of the group’s patients are state-funded. The company, now majority-owned by Royal Bank of Scotland, claims to be the country’s largest independent provider of mental healthcare services and specialist education for children with autism and behavioural disorders. It provides care and treats conditions ranging from eating disorders to depression. More than 5,500 staff operate from more than 52 hospitals, care homes and special education facilities. A new management team took over in March 2007 led by chief executive Philip Scott. Sales reached £229m in 2007.
