In 1997, five academics from Imperial College, London, founded Process Systems Enterprise (PSE) to commercialise a decade of research into mathematical modelling. Clients in the oil, gas and chemical industries use PSE’s software to optimise the operation of their plants, ensuring maximum efficiency and compliance with environmental and safety laws. Its software is licensed in Europe, America and Japan. Clients include four of the world’s largest chemical firms as well as BP and Shell. PSE has grown sales 78% a year, from £352,000 in 1998 to £1.1m in 2000.
