Five academics from Imperial College, London, founded Process Systems Enterprise (PSE) in 1997 to commercialise a decade of research into mathematical modelling. Customers such as BP and Shell use PSE’s software to optimise operation of their plants and to help design new ones with maximum efficiency. The London company’s software is licensed in Europe, America and Japan, where it has just opened an office. Sales grew 117% a year from £441,000 in 1999 to £2.1m in 2001.
