With seven subsidiaries specialising in produce from purple sprouting broccoli to mini turnips and potatoes, Produce World aims to be Europe’s leading supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables. Run by the fourth generation of the Burgess family, the group specialises in organic produce and its ventures include a joint growing operation in Andalucia. In November 2007, it purchased produce supplier Marshalls Holdings for an undisclosed amount in its largest acquisition to date. Sales under chief executive William Burgess grew to £222.7m in 2008.
