Ron Hamilton claims to be the inventor of the one-day disposable contact lens. He sold his first company to Bausch and Lomb for £33m, including rights to his patents. In 1999 he founded Provis, believing there were advances still to be made. The company has introduced a lens that blocks ultra-violet light and says it has sold more than 50m lenses. All the lenses are made at its Glasgow plant. Provis has received £4.3m of investment from Scottish Equity Partners and Scottish Enterprise. Sales have grown 265% a year from £173,000 in 2001 to £2.3m in 2003 with exports accounting for 70%.
