When Mike Nicholls and Brian Waldron’s boss declared Microsoft Windows a “non-starter” when it was launched in 1992, they disagreed enough to leave and develop their own Windows-based portfolio management software for investment houses.
In 1996 their company, Pulse Software Systems, scored its first real success when it gained NatWest Stockbrokers as its first big client. Since then the Surrey company’s sales have risen 78% a year from £331,000 to just over £1m in 2001.
