Ron Gould, a former Vat inspector at Customs and Excise, founded the Qdos tax consultancy in 1995. Its business is split equally between tax and legal advice for accountants and solicitors, and selling insurance packages that protect against tax-return investigations and unexpected liabilities. Gould says that Royal Bank of Scotland offered to buy the business, but instead he convinced it to become a customer, joining a list of clients that includes PKF and Tenon. The Leicestershire company also has partnerships with Composite Legal Expenses to provide tax and employment law advice to the British Chambers of Commerce. Its sales have grown 133% a year from £414,000 in 2000 to £5.2m in 2003.
