The recent success of QPC Homes belies a tough history. John Parkinson left behind a career with Tarmac to found the company in 1982. It was hit badly during the recession of the early 1990s and for 18 months Parkinson went without a salary. But the links he maintained during that period have paid dividends. Multi-million pound contracts for customers such as Westbury and Crosby Homes have helped the Reading company build sales by 74% a year from £1.2m in 1998 to £6.4m in 2001, when it had 30 employees.
