In 2002 Rhydian Lewis and Peter Behrens, both 39, came up with the concept for this online marketplace. It matches borrowers and investors, who are able to set their own interest rates. The catalyst to launch in 2010 was the credit crunch, and Ratesetter has since facilitated total loans of more than £1bn, helping push sales, which are made up of fees, to £18.5m this year. The firm has raised more than £30m, £20m of it in 2015 from investors including veteran fund manager Neil Woodford.
