Real Wrap Co sandwiches debuted in university cafes as a healthy late-night alternative to kebabs and chips. Founded in 2012 by childhood friends Jason Howell, 33, and Phillippe Gill, 30, it has supplied sandwiches, wraps and hot food to clients ranging from airlines to Premier League football clubs, but most of its revenue comes from contracts with schools, universities and hospitals. It produces more than 13m meals each year in the UK, and sales hit £9.1m in 2019. The Bristol firm has reached its goal of zero waste to landfill, with its unused bread used to brew craft ale, and food waste going to anaerobic digestion to produce electricity, gas and fertiliser.
