Nick Jones worked in logistics for Jardines in Hong Kong and P&O in Australia before setting up his own company, Redfern International Logistics, in 1995. The company imports goods for its British customers. It places orders with foreign suppliers and then ships and stores the goods. Sales have grown 88% a year from £905,000 in 1997 to £6m in 2000, when the company had 16 staff. Jones attributes his success to investment in IT and strong customer service. ‘Even when we were small we invested in IT systems equivalent to those of larger competitors,’ he says. The firm has offices in London, Leeds and Glasgow.
