Cambridge-based Redtail Telematics has developed a “black box” that is installed in your car and records information about speed, braking pressure and other aspects of your driving. Discounted insurance premiums for the first three months or so are often offered to drivers in return for the data collected, which is then used to calculate further premiums. The company was founded in 2010 by Colin Smithers, 57. Sales reached £8.7m in 2016, boosted by a deal to supply its devices to Admiral insurance customers.
