Cambridge-based Redtail Telematics’ “black box” is installed in the cars of people who have bought insurance policies with providers that offer lower initial premiums in return for use of the data. The box relays details about speed, cornering and how hard a car is braking. The insurers then use this information to determine the driver’s premium. Founded in 2010 by Colin Smithers, 56, Redtail was spun out of sister company Plextek, a communications technology specialist. Sales to March 2015 hit £5.2m.
