Founded in 1985 by Professor Alan Reece, Newcastle-based Pearson Engineering designs and manufactures specialist equipment for British and foreign armed forces. As part of the Reece Group of companies it remains family-owned and managed: its chairman, John Reece, is the son of the founder. In April it won the Queen’s Award for Innovation for its range of rollers that are fitted to a variety of military vehicles to detonate buried mines without harm to the occupants. The company’s international sales grew 96% a year from £43.2m in 2009 to £166.6m in 2010. Its equipment is in service throughout the world, but its biggest market is America. The Reece Foundation, set up by Alan Reece to support engineering education in Britain, donated £5m to Cambridge University’s Institute for Manufacturing last year.
