School friends Chris Burdge and Alan Springford founded Responsive Designs in 1990, importing rugs from India and China. In 1995, the Surrey company spotted a growing UK market for laminated wooden flooring. It quickly found outlets with B&Q and Dickens and now claims to import 50% of the laminated wooden flooring sold in Britain every year. Its products also include Italian furniture, home furnishings and accessories for wooden flooring. With 90% of sales generated through B&Q, which controls 62% of the British flooring market, Responsive Designs works closely with the DIY superstore, providing it with brochures and videos to showcase its products. Sales have increased by 76% a year, from £3.8m in 1996 to £20.9m in 1999.
