RHM is behind 850 supermarket favourites such as Bisto, Mr Kipling and Sharwood’s. The company bakes about a third of all the bread eaten in Britain under brands such as Hovis and Mothers Pride, and also supplies Marks & Spencer and McDonald’s. Its sales remained steady in 2003 at an annualised £1,723m, although the company divested three small subsidiaries. RHM was bought by the venture-capital firm Doughty Hanson for £1,200m in 2000. Doughty has announced its intention to float the company but has put its plans on hold until the stock market recovers.
