Baking more than a million loaves of bread a week under brands such as Hovis and Mothers Pride, RHM supplies about a third of Britain’s daily bread from its 18 bakeries. It makes 850 products under brands such as Mr Kipling, Sharwood’s and Bisto, and supplies companies such as Marks & Spencer and McDonald’s. Sales at the Marlow-based company reached £1,735m in 2002, with operating profits up more than £20m to £103m. It had 20,983 staff at the time. RHM was bought by the venture capitalist Doughty Hanson for £1.2 billion in 2000. Last year Doughty announced its intention to float the company but has put its plans on hold until the stock market recovers.
