In the 1980s, while he was working for a small venture-capital company, Roger Storey was placed on the board of a nursing-home operator to monitor one of its investments. He ended up joining the company as the financial director before becoming managing director and taking it to an Ofex quote. With this experience behind him, Storey secured backing from the venture capitalist Cinven in 1995 and set up on his own. Ridgmont, based in Hertfordshire, now runs 19 residential and nursing homes and employs more than 800 staff. Most of its homes are in Hampshire and north England. Storey says acquisitions have fuelled growth, driving sales up 69% a year, from £2m in 1996 to £9.8m in 1999.
