The River Island clothing chain’s 200 shops throughout the UK, Ireland, Poland and the Middle East are proving to be popular places to shop. Thanks to its strong performance, sales at its owner, Lewis Trust, grew to £477m in 2002. Profits rose by £39m to £58m that year. Lewis Trust, which is owned by the family of the founder Bernard Lewis, also operates the Isrotel hotel chain in Israel but tourism there has been hit by political unrest.
