Profits at Lewis Trust, founded by Bernard Lewis in the 1960s, have fallen after a recent asset write-down of its Isrotel hotel chain in Israel, where tourism has been hit by political unrest and terrorism. There is much better news for the group elsewhere, however. Its River Island chain of fashion stores, with more than 200 shops throughout the UK, Ireland, Poland and the Middle East, continues to prosper. The London-based company reported an increase in sales to £425m in 2001, when it employed 4,350 full-time staff.
