Profits at London-based Lewis Trust, founded by Bernard Lewis in the 1960s, have fallen recently due to the asset write down of its Isrotel hotel chain in Israel following the 11th September attacks and the continued troubles in the region. However, the Lewis Trust Group’s primary subsidiary, the River Island chain of fashion stores, with over 200 shops throughout the UK, Ireland, Poland and the Middle East, continues to prosper. The company reported sales of £406m in 2000, when the group employed 4,361 staff.
