With 1,000 UK filling stations closing every year, it was not easy for Visvanathan Ramakrishnan and Colin Fullerton to get funding to start a petrol-station business in 1995. But the pair persisted, and eventually won backing from NatWest. Starting with just one station, Roadside Group made a large acquisition of BP garages in the Middlesbrough and Newcastle areas in late 2002, in a deal worth several million pounds. The company now has 10 sites, and its sales have risen 65% a year from £9.1m in 2000 to £40.9m in 2003.
