The Robert Dyas high-street chain sells goods that are more usually found in out-of-town retail parks. Eighty stores spread across southeast England sell a homely mix of pots, pans, tools, cleaning equipment and other domestic goods. Customers can also shop online or through the company’s catalogue. Former Somerfield boss Alan Smith became chief executive in March 2004 when the company was acquired for £60m by Change Capital Partners. In-store promotions have helped to boost profits, which rose 52% a year from £1.8m in 2001 to £6.5m in 2004.
