This northern firm does much more than build houses – it also constructs schools, supermarkets, hospitals and office blocks, is involved in property development and investment, and makes timber-frame house kits. That diversity has served the group well, allowing it to win a raft of Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts under founder Bill Robertson. Its responsibilities do not end with construction – the group operates a facilities management company to run and maintain schools and hospitals for up to 30 years. Profits grew 99% a year from £2m in 2003 to £15.7m in 2006, as Robertson won larger projects and extended the firm’s geographic reach.
